Objective

Introduce how to configure the LAN port VLAN and WAN port VLAN of the Omada gateway via Omada Controller.

Requirements

  • Omada or Omada Pro gateway

Introduction

VLAN further divides the broadcast domain within the LAN. When creating the LAN Network on the Omada gateway, VLAN configuration is required. Afterward, you can set the PVID for each port so that the connected downstream devices can obtain IP addresses from different LAN segments. You can also configure egress rules for each VLAN and configure VLAN for the WAN port.

Configuration

LAN VLAN Configuration

Step 1. Go to Settings > Wired Networks > LAN > Networks > Create New LAN, you need to configure the VLAN at the same time. You can choose the normal mode (single VLAN) or the bridge mode (multiple VLANs).

Note: Some models like ER605W does not support bridge VLAN currently. In Controller, there is no unified VLAN management configuration. You need to directly select which physical ports this LAN (VLAN) will be added to on the LAN network configuration page.

Step 2. Go to Devices > Gateway Device’s private page > Ports to modify the PVID for each physical port.

Note: In Controller, you cannot directly modify the egress rules (whether to add a VLAN tag to the egress packets). It changes based on the PVID. When you create a new LAN network, all the ports added to its VLAN will be tagged. But if you modify the port's PVID to the ID of the new VLAN, then this VLAN will become untagged on that port. Pay extra attention that the default LAN is untagged on all ports and will not change.

WAN VLAN Configuration

Step 1. Go to Settings > Wired Networks > Internet > Advanced Settings. Enter the Internet VLAN and check the 802.1Q Tag option. After checked, the packets going out from this WAN port will contain the configured VLAN tag.

Conclusion

With the above steps you can finish configuration of LAN/WAN VLAN.

FAQ

1. What should I pay attention to when using VLAN?

Re:

  • Avoid conflicts between LAN VLAN and WAN VLAN.
  • If your external dial-up environment does not support receiving dial-up packets with VLAN tags, do not add VLAN tags to the WAN port.
  • Pay attention to keep the VLAN configurations consistent on the gateway's downstream devices like Switches to avoid interconnection failures or connection interruptions.

2. What is the difference between bridge VLAN and normal VLAN, and which should I choose?

Re: If you need to further divide the broadcast domain within the same LAN, use bridge VLAN. If there is no need for further division, normal VLAN is sufficient.

3. Can VLANs be modified?

You can change the VLAN ID, but note that the corresponding PVID and other settings will also change accordingly.

4. Can devices in different LANs (VLANs) communicate with each other?

Yes, they can. VLAN just divides the broadcast domain at Layer 2, and devices can communicate with each other through Layer 3 or routing on the Omada gateway. However, please note that there is single-cast isolation between different VLANs under the same bridge VLAN, and they are generally unable to communicate.
